introduction

The Mediterranean Sea has been navigated for millennia, carrying a profound history and significance deeply rooted in the blood of the cultures surrounding it. To the ancient Romans it was mare nostrum - our sea – and even today, to those living along its shores it is still affectionately known that way. She is the immense blue, mostly serene, sometimes severe, that wraps the people in her arms and binding together these diverse worlds. Amidst these salty lands of lemon, fish, olives and wine skirting the vast marine expanse, there are striking differences and yet striking similarities as well. The Mediterranean climate creates a sweetness, a softness, and a love of life in the citizens living along its shores. Perhaps a person from the French Côte d’Azurhas more kinship with someone living on the Italian Costa Amalfitana or the Spanish Costa Brava than with a compatriot from the north of France!

And yet, there are differences. The language for sure is a prominent divider, although they are all stem from...

DAY

1

¡Bienvenidos a España! In Spain, dinners often start late, around 10:00-11:00 pm or even later. However, as we embark on our journey, we'll ease into this tradition gradually and opt for an earlier dinner, American-style, for our first day! Let's gather together to relish our first experience of Spanish cuisine and discuss the exciting weeks ahead!

DAY

2

We are in Europe, renowned for its pedestrian friend cities with their compact historical centers. Let’s enjoy the chance to take a wander walk through the labyrinthine alleys of this Gothic city. Dark stones, gargoyles and loads of churches populate the center and stand in stark contrast to the colorful restaurants, tourist shops stuffed with pottery, and long-trailing succulents dangling off balconies that make you wonder how long they’ve been growing there. We’ll explore some of the indoor or outdoor markets, a hallmark feature of the Mediterranean lifestyle, where locals come daily to buy the ingredients for their meals. Our stroll continues as we set our sights on the star of our journey: the sea. From charming lookouts we’ll marvel at the coastline stretching northward as a sandy expanse of beach covered in sunbathers or look toward the south where a bustling port hosts an array of boats.

In the afternoon we’ll visit one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the city. Sometimes there is an undeniable reason why a place is bustling with visitors and this is one such place. Enter the realm of Sagrada Familia, a cathedral envisioned by one of the Spain’s star architects and undoubtedly, it’s most eccentric artist and dreamer, Gaudi. My first step inside, I caught my breath in surprise and was moved to tears! It is a place that defies explanation and truly must be experienced firsthand. Construction started 140 years ago and remarkably continues to this day! Indeed, when it was designed, it wasn’t even possible to build with the technology they had available, but Gaudi unwaveringly believed that one day it would be possible. He and his star project stand as an example and inspiration for holding on unwaveringly to a dream and a vision and believing in the face of all obstacles!

Tonight, we’ll have a group dinner and there might even be some special guests joining us!
