Art is Everywhere!

“Mexico City! This city moves! We keep hearing (and even experiencing) that everything is possible here! And one of the places that you feel it the most is the art scene! They say that this city has more museums than anywhere else in the world other than London. Everything from obscure little museums about one item, like the doll museum or the museum of time, to huge internationally acclaimed museums like the National Museum of Anthropology, but also so many incredible art museums, from collections of pre-Columbian artefacts to colonial-era art, up to contemporary art museums. But it isn't just the museums, the city is covered in art galleries, each with its own unique taste and offerings. The exhibitions change often and when they do, the galleries offer opening events and clausuras (closings), with guests dressed in styles that really match the offering of the gallery. It is fascinating to see the art and to do a bit of people watching too! Often the galleries serve mezcal (a type of smoky tequila) which guests sip straight from little glasses. Yesterday we were even served pink mezcal, created by mixing in cochineal (an insect that we used to dye our wool yarn red on our Argentina cultural immersion trip)! Sometimes you look at the art and wonder who it will appeal to. Other times, you immediately feel an intense curiosity and attraction, and yet at others, you need to learn more about it to appreciate and understand it. This is the job of the gallerist, or the translator of the pieces, whose goal is to sell them. Often here in Mexico City, the gallerists are kind and intelligent, full of energy and passion for what they do. It is as fascinating to see the works as to meet the people, and if you're lucky enough to hit the opening or closing event, mezcal or Bohemia beer in hand, you'll get the opportunity to meet the artist themselves! Experiencing the art scene of Mexico City is one of the highlights of a visit here! The vibe and energy is intense and contagious!”
