"In general, we try to avoid the super touristy places that are overun with people and difficult to enjoy. We find that an Instagram culture has created an over-touristed torture chamber of many of the most popular places around the world. However sometimes the big highlights just can't be missed and they vale la pena. Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul is one of those. Her story is compelling, a colorful, passionate young woman, she battled her own physical ailments and the big boys of the 20's and 30's and in the end, she became known as one of the most influential and important Latin American artists of all time. The museum is crowded, packed actually, but if you push that aside, you are offered an intimate experience to know Frida a bit more, to see where she was born and lived, to see many of her works, the dishes in her kitchen and things she chose to create, entertain with, decorate with. You see her paintbrushes, corsets and clothing. You read about her life and Diego's. And you feel her vibrance and intensity. Beyond this little museum, the neighborhood of Coyoacan is lovely with large trees lining the street, flowering vines and poinsettas hanging over walls and tucked in every possible space between colorful houses and cobblestone streets. The central plaza is absolutely full of life and music and chaos. Mexico City is truly a delightful surprise!"
